[Exclusive Interview] TIOT Makes a Bold Return with "FLEX LINE"

The 5-member boy group TIOT under Redstart ENM, consisting of Kim Minseoung, Kum Junhyeon, Hong Keonhee, Choi Woojin, and Shin Yechan made a comeback with their 3rd Mini Album "FLEX LINE" on April 17.

TIOT made a comeback about 5 months after releasing their digital single 'Take It Slow' in November of last year. The 3rd Mini Album "FLEX LINE" includes 4 tracks; 'Always', 'Sweet Magic', 'Birthday', and the title track 'FLEX LINE.'

'FLEX LINE' is an impressive hip-hop dance song with a strong saxophone riff and energetic hip-hop rhythm. The heavy kick and solid bassline add to the groove, and it is a track that can dominate the stage with a sensual sound and exciting atmosphere. It expresses a confident attitude and confidence to break through limitations while forging one’s own path to the future they dream of.

KpopWise caught up with TIOT ahead of the highly anticipated comeback to discuss the album and to learn their feelings about approaching their first anniversary milestone.

Congratulations on your new album! Can you tell us about your song 'FLEX LINE'?

The theme of our third mini album and title track "FLEX LINE" is confidence. The song contains the message that we are overcoming our limitations and moving toward the future we have dreamed of. In particular, this album contains our story and colors more deeply than ever before.

세 번째 미니 앨범 타이틀곡 '플렉스 라인' 의 주제는 자신감입니다. 이 곡은 우리가 한계를 극복하고 꿈꿔왔던 미래를 향해 나아가고 있다는 메시지를 담고 있습니다. 특히 이번 앨범은 우리의 이야기와 색깔을 그 어느 때보다 깊이 있게 담아냈습니다.

What inspired the concept for the song 'FLEX LINE'?

The concept inspiration for 'FLEX LINE' is that the word Flex is often used to show off money and jewelry, but it is also often used to show off coolness. I think we got inspired by that word and thought, what if we showed off our team’s coolness or unique color? When making music, adding your voice is often called a top line, so I think we thought of it as meaning ‘showing off our music to our heart’s content.

'플렉스 라인' 이라는 노래의 콘셉트에 영감을 준 것은 무엇인가요?

FLEX LINE에서 콘셉트 영감은 Flex 라는 단어가 돈, 보석 을 자랑할때에도 종종 쓰이는 단어이지만 멋을 뽐낼때도 많이 쓰이는 단어거든요. 그 단어에서 영감을 받아서 우리 팀의 멋 혹은 고유의 색깔을 뽐내보면 어떨까 하고 생각이 든 것 같아요. 음악을 할 때 주로 목소리를 얹는걸 탑 라인 이라고 표현하는데 그거에 빗대어 ‘우리의 음악을 마음 껏 뽐낸다’라는 의미로도 생각했던 거 같아요.

Can you share any memorable moments from the recording process of this EP?

JH: The most memorable moment in the recording process was the day I recorded "Birthday". It was with the same songwriter from ROCK THANG, and it's been a year since we met again, so I wanted to show how much I've grown.

KH: In the previous songs, it was mainly thick, low-pitched, and slightly scratched tones to make an impact, but when recording songs in this album, I think I put a lot of practice and effort into making it

feel comfortable while maintaining my unique voice.

YC: Personally, I remember the day we recorded the song Sweet Magic. In fact, there was an incident where we had to stop recording and start again on another day. Because I had to record with

a different tone and singing style than usual, I had a harder time practicing than with other songs. However, thanks to practicing for that song, I think I was able to well in recording Birthday, which uses a similar singing style, so I remember thinking that it was a good thing I practiced!

이 EP의 녹음 과정에서 기억에 남는 순간들을 공유해 주실 수 있나요?

준현: 녹음 과정에서 가장 기억에 남는 순간은 Birthday 녹음을 했던 날입니다. 왜냐하면 ROCK THANG 작곡가님의 곡이고 1년 만에 다시 뵙게 돼서 더 성장한 모습을 보여드리고 싶었습니다.

건희: 이 전 곡들에서는 굵고 로우톤으로 약간 긁는 듯한 톤을 주로 사용해서 임팩트를 줬는데 이번 앨범 곡을 녹음할 때는 제가 가진 목소리는 살리면서 여유로운 느낌을 내는 쪽으로 많이 연습하고

시도했던 것 같습니다.

예찬: 저는 개인적으로는 Sweet Magic 라는 곡을 녹음날이 기억에 남습니다. 사실 녹음을 진행하다가 중단을 하고 다른 날 다시 하게 된 사건이 있었습니다. 평소와는 다른 톤, 창법으로 녹음을 하게 돼서

다른곡보다 연습하는데 어려움을 겪었습니다. 하지만 그 곡을 통해서 연습한 덕분에 비슷한 창법을 쓰는 Birthday의 녹음을 잘 할 수 있었던 것 같아서 오히려 연습하길 잘했다라고 생각했던 기억이 있습니다!

Were there any funny or unexpected moments while practicing the choreography?

JH: There was a moment in the second verse chorus choreography where everyone was doing the choreography in the same direction, but Hong Keon-hee kept doing it in the opposite direction, which

created some funny situations. I remember those moments because they were the most unexpected and funny.

WJ: I think it's fun when the regrettable movements come out the way I wanted them to. And there are times when I burst out in laughter unexpectedly at a gag that the hyungs suddenly throw in out of nowhere.

안무 연습하는 동안 재미있거나 예상치 못한 순간이 있었나요?

준현: 홍건희 님께서 2절 코러스 안무 가운데에서 다같이 같은 방향으로 안무를 하는 순간이 있는데 혼자서 자꾸 반대로 하셔서 웃긴 상황들이 만들어졌었습니다. 그때 그 순간들이 가장 예상하지 못하게

웃겼어서 기억에 남습니다.

우진: 아쉽던 동작이 원하던 느낌대로 나왔을 때 재밌는 거 같아요. 그리고 형들이 갑자기 뜬금없이 던진 개그에 예상치 못하게 터질 때가 있습니다.

What message or feeling do you want fans to take away from listening to this new EP?

MS: What I want Lottie to feel in this FLEX LINE is to know what TIOT seeks and what message it wants to convey. I think I put a lot of what I want to say to Lottie through the lyrics and expressed the

musical color more like TIOT.

KH: I think the message I'm trying to convey is a little different for each album, but I hope the message of Birthday reaches LOTI! The message is to enjoy every day like it's your birthday, but I think it's hard to purely enjoy a day that repeats itself. So I hope LOTI listen to this song and be positively influenced, and find small but definite happiness in their lives!!

팬들이 이 새로운 EP를 듣는 것에서 어떤 메시지나 느낌을 없애길 원하시나요?

민성: 이 FLEX 라인에서 로티가 느끼기를 바라는 것은 TIOT가 엇을 추구하고 어떤 메시지를 전달하고자 하는지 아는 것입니다. 로티에게 하고 싶은 말을 가사에 많이 넣고 음악적 색깔을 TIOT처럼 표현한 것 같아요.

건희: 이번 앨범마다 전하고자 하는 메세지가 조금씩 다른 것 같은데 저는 Birthday의 메세지가 로티들에게 닿았으면 좋겠습니다! 전하는 메세지는 날마다 생일처럼 즐기자 이지만 반복되는 하루를 순수하게 즐긴다는 것이 어려운 부분이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 로티들이 이 노래를 듣고 긍정적인 영향을 받고 각자의 삶에서 소소하지만, 확실한 행복을 챙길 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다!!

If each member had to pick one B-side from FLEX LINE that best represents their personality, which would it be and why?

MS: I think FLEX LINE is a song that represents my personality well. The overall atmosphere and musical color are like that, and since the rap lyrics in the first verse and the second verse are my

lyrics, I think it expresses me more clearly.

JH: The part that best shows my individuality is my part in the pre-chorus of the first verse of FLEX LINE. About a week before the comeback, a new movement came out, so I modified the choreography to make it more like me.

KH: I think that this album verse 1 shows my personality the best! I think it reflects what I've been researching and pursuing lately! I think you'll be able to see a bit of my new mischievous side.

WJ: In my part, there is a part where I say GO FLEX LINE, GO FLEX LINE, and I think my personality and charm stand out more in that scene. After moving and dancing violently, the members

gather in the center and I make a card-scratching gesture in the middle. I think the move is the point.

YC: I would like to choose the bridge part from the FLEX LINE. Rather than saying that it represents my personality well, I thought of the bridge because I think it is a part that captures the relaxed feeling

that I am pursuing well!

각 멤버가 FLEX LINE에서 자신의 개성을 가장 잘 나타내는 B면을 선택해야 한다면, 그 이유는 무엇이며 무엇일까요?

민성: FLEX LINE이 저의 개성을 잘 나타내는 곡이라고 생각됩니다. 전체적인 분위기나 음악적 색깔도 그렇고 1절 벌스, 2절의 랩 가사가 제 가사인 만큼 저를 더 뚜렷하게 표현하는 것 같아요.

준현: 저의 개성을 가장 잘 나타내는 곳은 FLEX LINE의 1절 프리코러스의 제 파트입니다. 컴백하기 1주일 전쯤 새로운 무빙이 나오면서 조금 더 나답게 안무를 수정하였습니다.

건희: 저는 이번 앨범 verse 1이 저의 개성이 제일 잘 보인다고 생각합니다! 제가 요새 연구하고 추구하는 모습이 잘 녹여졌다고 생각해요! 약간 저의 새로운 악동 같은 모습이 보일 수 있을 거 같습니다.

우진: 제 파트 중에 GO FLEX LINE, GO FLEX LINE 하는 부분이 있는데 여기가 저의 개성과 매력을 더 돋보일 수 있게 표현한 장면인 거 같습니다. 털고 격하게 움직이다 멤버들이 모이면서 제가 센터에 서 서 카드를 긁는 제스처를 합니다. 그 동작이 포인트인 것 같습니다.

예찬: FLEX LINE에서 브릿지 파트를 선택 하고 싶습니다. 제 개성을 잘 살렸다기 보단 제가 추구하는 여유로운 느낌이 잘 담긴 파트인 것 같아서 브릿지가 떠올랐습니다!

In what specific ways do you feel the group has improved since your last release?

It's been a while since we've shown a new, powerful performance since our official debut, so we're full of energy. And I think we've learned a lot from the experiences we've had on various stages, big and small, over the past year that we couldn't learn through practice alone. We want to quickly show our fans a new, grown, and cool side of ourselves.

지난 앨범 발매 이후 그룹이 구체적으로 어떤 면에서 발전했다고 생각하시나요?

정식데뷔 이후 강렬한 퍼포먼스를 새롭게 보여드리는게 오랜만이라서 저희는 에너지가 가득 차 있습니다. 그리고 지난 1년동안 크고 작은 여러 무대에서 경험을 하며 연습으로만 알 수 없는 것들을 많이 배웠다고 생각합니다. 팬분들께 빨리 새로운 모습, 성장한 모습, 멋있는 모습을 보여드리고 싶습니다.

It is almost your debut anniversary. Looking back at the past year, how has TIOT transformed musically as a group?

As the year has passed, the individuality or color of the TIOT members has become more distinct, and the individuality of the group's music has become more distinct. I want to grow more in the future and make TIOT known to not only LOTI but also the public. I hope that after watching TIOT's songs and performances, you can gain the strength and courage to get back up and move forward even if you fall down.

곧 데뷔 기념일이 다가오네요. 지난 한 해를 돌아보며 TIOT는 음악적으로 어떤 변화를 겪었나요?

1년이 다 되어가면서 TIOT 멤버들의 개성 혹은 색깔이 짙어져 그룹의 음악의 개성도 한층 뚜렷해진 거 같습니다. 앞으로 더 성장해서 로티 뿐만아니라 대중들에게도 TIOT라는 그룹을 알리고싶어요. TIOT

노래와 무대를 보고 넘어져도 다시 일어서고 나아갈 수 있는 힘과 용기를 얻을 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.

What was the biggest lesson you have learned after a year of debut?

KH: I felt that taking care of my body was my responsibility! I exercise a little to build muscle and build my body, but it was really hard when I got sick while I was active! So I think I learned the lesson of always taking care of my health and taking care of myself, even when I wasn't active!

WJ: You shouldn't set limits for yourself. The moment you think about limits, you stop trying. If you keep trying, you will find that you are getting closer to your goal, even if it is just a little bit.

YC: I got to stand on many stages during my one year of promotions, and when I first debuted, I felt bad about being nervous before going on stage and I really wanted to avoid being nervous, but now that a year has passed, I've come to realize that being nervous isn't a bad thing, it actually helps me focus more!

데뷔 1년을 거치며 얻은 가장 큰 교훈은 무엇이었나요?

건희: 몸 관리는 나의 책임이다를 느꼈습니다! 약간 운동을 몸을 키우고 근육을 만들기 위해서 이기도 하지만 정말 활동 중에 아파버리면 좀 많이 힘들더라구요!그래서 활동이 아니더라도 항상 건강을 챙기고 스스로 관리 하자라는 교훈을 얻은 거 같습니다!

우진: 자기 자신에게 한계를 만들어서는 안된다. 한계를 생각하는 순간 더 이상을 노력을 하지 않게 되더라구요. 계속 해서 노력하다 보면 아주 조금씩이지만 목표를 향해 다가가고 있다고 생각됩니다.

예찬: 1년동안 활동 하면서 많은 무대를 서게 됐었는데요 데뷔초에는 무대를 하기 전에 긴장하는 제가 아쉽고 긴장을 안 하고 싶은 마음이 컸었는데 1년이 지난 지금 긴장을 하는 것은 나쁜 것이 아니라 더

집중 할 수 있게 도와주는 것이라는 걸 알게 됐습니다!

Is there a message you want to tell your fans LOTI?

MS: While preparing the album, while promoting, and even during the break, I always think about what to do with LOTI and what I like, and I am greatly influenced by the fans. As a result, it feels like it

has become a part of my life, and I have had many thoughts. I want to thank LOTI for being with me, and tell them that I want to grow into a better artist in the future to repay them.

JH: The comeback is really close, and as much as the fans have waited, TIOT has grown and we want to show you an even better side of ourselves. Thank you for always waiting. See you soon!

KH: I'm excited and nervous at the same time because this is the moment to stand on stage in front of LOTI with a new look! But this time, I think I'm confident because the members and I have worked

hard and practiced a lot!! I hope you look forward to this album because I can make sure that LOTI won't regret waiting!!

팬들에게 전하고 싶은 메시지가 있나요?

민성: 앨범을 준비하면서도 활동을 하면서도 활동 휴식기에도 항상 로티와 함께 무엇을 할지 어떤걸 좋아할지 생각을 하다보니 전체적으로 팬들의 영향을 많이 받습니다. 그러다 보니 뭔가 삶의 일부가 된

거 같아 여러가지 생각이 들었는데요. 로티에게 함께해줘서 고맙다는 말과 앞으로 더 멋진 아티스트로 성장해 보답하고 싶다는 말을 하고싶습니다.

준현: 컴백이 정말 얼마 남지 않았는데요 팬분들이 기다려 주신 만큼 TIOT가 성장해온 만큼 더 좋은 모습 보여드리고싶습니다. Always 기다려 주셔서 감사합니다. 곧 만나요!

건희: 또 이렇게 로티 앞에서 새로운 모습으로 무대하는 순간이 와서 설레기도 떨리기도 하는 거 같습니다! 하지만 이번에 정말 멤버 다같이 저 스스로도 많이 노력하고 연습하고 했기 때문에 자신 있는 거 같습니다!!로티의 기다림이 절대 후회되지 않게 할 수 있으니까 이번 앨범 기대 많이 해주셨으면 좋겠습니다!!
