RM is the next member of BTS to show a new intimate side to himself with his new solo documentary film RM: Right People, Wrong Place. The film has officially been selected to premiere in the 'Open Cinema' section of the 29th BUSAN International Film Festival (BIFF).
RM: Right People, Wrong Place chronicles the eight months leading up to RM’s military enlistment after the release of his first solo album Indigo (December 2022). Closely following the creation of his second solo album Right Place, Wrong Person (May 2024), of which was critically acclaimed. The album featured ten tracks and saw RM go in a new direction musically, and the film will put a spotlight on the creative powerhouse's journey of self-discovery as he channels his experiences and emotions into an album that showcases his distinctive sensibility and beliefs through a candid portrayal of feeling like a stranger, out of place.
Produced by HYBE and distributed by CJ 4DPLEX, Joon Beom Sim, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX shared, “We are delighted to announce the global theatrical release of the BTS RM documentary, RM: Right People, Wrong Place, in collaboration with HYBE and Bighit Music, building on the success of our previous partnership for BTS: Yet To Come in Cinemas. With its premiere at the prestigious BUSAN Film festival, we are confident that RM: Right People, Wrong Place will resonate with a wide audience of both moviegoers and fans upon its official release.”
Directed by Lee Seokjun, who has also produced BTS bandmate j-hope's music videos for "Arson" and "MORE," the film takes viewers through Seoul, Tokyo, and London—cities where RM captured the essence of the album’s visuals, including concept photos and music videos—providing an in-depth look into his creative vision. The various backdrops and diverse artistic collaborations offer an evocative glimpse into his introspection and growth adding depth to the maze-like exploration of RM’s identity as both BTS’s leader and the individual Kim Namjoon (RM’s given name).
Set to premiere in BIFF’s ‘Open Cinema’ section—which highlights new works of artistic excellence and broad international appeal—through a large-scale outdoor screening at the Busan Cinema Center, RM: Right People, Wrong Place achieves a significant milestone as the first film focusing on a K-pop artist to be officially selected for the ‘Open Cinema’ section at Asia's largest film festival.
RM is the fifth member to have his solo journey closely documented, following in the footsteps of j-hope (Jack In The Box) and SUGA (Road:To D-day), both of whom had their album documentaries released in cinemas worldwide. Vocalist Jimin shared his personal journey recording and writing his album Face, premiering exclusively on Weverse, while maknae Jungkook's documentary I am still will show in cinemas around the world September 18th.
The premiere of RM: Right People, Wrong Place will be followed by a global theatrical release scheduled for later this year.
